Marine litter awareness programme in schools

Hands-on workshops and a shoreline observation diary in coastal schools taught pupils to recognise, classify and report marine litter.

Measurable outputs

Climate relevance

The programme connects what pupils find on their own shoreline with the wider effect of plastic on coastal ecosystems and the climate, building the observation habit that community-based monitoring later depends on.

Conditions for replication

Works where schools sit within walking distance of a shoreline that is safe to visit and where the teacher training fits the school calendar. The diary format has to be identical across schools for the results to be compiled at county level.
